Teesdale Orchards

Recording local Orchards

Based on the amount of apples that turned up in your green waste sacks last year - we're interested in starting a scrumping project to make use of the unwanted apples in Teesdale - first steps where are all the trees? If you register a tree with us, we are considering supplying you with a separate bag to put your windfall in - and place out with the Rotters collection.

We are hoping to develop a Google Map with a list of the Orchards in the area (and / or single trees that provide fruit) - watch this space for more information.

Traditional Orchard Survey

PTES - People's Trust for Endangered Species (www.ptes.org ) are running a survey to record all the traditional orchards in the UK as part of our national biodiversity and 5 remaining trees are all it takes to have it classified as an old orchard - click here for further information on their web-site.  You can provide your own survey information to them directly.

Local Heritage Apples

From speaking with people at Common Ground (http://www.commonground.org.uk/) - it seems we have some County Durham Heritage Apples - a couple seem particularly relevant to Teesdale.  At the moment, all I have is the names - so anyone who knows anything else about these apples - please get in touch.  The varieties are called; Teesdale Nonpareil, Barnards Baker, Gateshead Lemon Pippin, Hebburn Red, Woolatin Pippin, Mrs Lakeman's Seedling. (www.england-in-particular.info for more heritage varieties)

There is also an Apple book provided by those at Common Ground called "Apple Source" - so for any enthusiasts, please go to their web-site.
